Plasma systems for manufacturing and disinfection of medical devices

Medical Technology Ireland

Relyon plasma from Regensburg, a subsidiary of TDK Electronics, is presenting plasma devices at Medical Technology Ireland which support the manufacturing of medical devices. In addition to the PiezoBrush series for classic surface treatment in manufacturing, the MediPlas components for sterilisation and disinfection will also be on display.

Regensburg. Medical Technology Ireland – Europe’s second largest and fastest growing exhibition for the development and manufacturing of medical devices – will take place in Galway from 25-26 September 2024. Over 300 global suppliers will be showcasing innovative medical technology products and solutions for the medical technology industry. As a member of the German Pavilion, relyon plasma will be presenting PiezoBrush plasma devices for surface treatment and the high-performance ozone generator based on MediPlas components for integration into medical devices on stand 221 on the 2nd floor.

Plasma in the manufacturing of medical devices

For many years now, plasma has played a key role in process and quality optimisation in the manufacturing of medical devices. Cold atmospheric pressure plasma is used to clean, disinfect, modify and functionalise a wide variety of surfaces. As a result, they are optimally prepared for subsequent process steps such as bonding, painting and printing.

Bonding in particular poses a major challenge in medical production, as materials, adhesives or primers have been adapted from the formulation or withdrawn from the market due to a large number of regulations. This means that previously stable bonding processes no longer function optimally. Here, surface treatment with cold atmospheric pressure plasma provides a remedy by optimally preparing the surface to be bonded so that a stable adhesive bond is created even under less than ideal initial conditions.

The PiezoBrush PZ3 hand-held device is suitable for investigating whether cold plasma provides the desired process improvement for a specific application. This is ideal for initial feasibility tests as well as for the production of small series. The device has various process modes that enable reproducible parameter sets to be determined. The PiezoBrush PZ3-i integration solution then allows a smooth transition to automated series production. Thanks to the simple integration into an existing system, only minimal adjustments to the manufacturing process and production sequence are required.

MediPlas components for disinfection and sterilisation

The MediPlas Reactor and MediPlas Driver together form an innovative ozone generator that produces a non-thermal, cold atmospheric plasma. This process produces reactive species, including ozone, nitrogen oxides and peroxides, which are known for their strong sterilising and disinfecting properties.

The modular design of the system enables flexible integration into various applications in medical technology and the pharmaceutical industry. This makes the innovative sterilisation and disinfection technology accessible to a wide range of users. As a result, efficiency and safety in the treatment and manufacture of medical products can be significantly increased.

The use of plasma technologies not only increases the efficiency of disinfection, but also minimises the environmental impact as fewer chemical reagents are required. This innovation could therefore represent a significant advance in hygiene and safety standards in sensitive areas such as medicine and pharmacy.
